#TYU or the Youth Uprising is the title Wasted.ie have given to the movement of youth that have impressed the world over, with their unwavering commitment to saving their future.
The name you will all know by now is Greta Thunberg, the 16 year old Swedish Student who has started somewhat of a revolution across the world.
“Our house is on fire,” she said
in a speech last year at Davos. “I don’t want you to be hopeful. I want you to panic.”
And so it began. Almost 2 years ago now, Greta staged a strike for Climate Change outside the Swedish parliament building. She went by herself, with her bike, a hand-painted sign and climate change fact sheets.
But today, she is not alone. Greta’s circle of friends and allies are growing rapidly and they have a voice that’s louder than anything we have heard in some time.
How could a 16 year old student convince the President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker to commit billions of Euro to fight climate change?
But she did.
In March last year year, students in more than 120 countries went on strike from school to demand action on climate change. An estimated 2 million people – mostly teenagers and preteens, gathered in thousands of cities and towns to demand their political leaders meet existing climate goals.
Their intention was to grab attention – and they succeeded. From Dublin, to Uganda, we watched scenes of young people marching on main streets in capital cities with nothing but their voices and some hand painted signs.
And what a sight it was.
Because it is those under the age of 18 right now, who may be around to see the end of the century and they are not happy with what we are leaving behind. ‘Why are you stealing our future’ Greta asks us. These are the new voices are helping us see and understand the urgency of the crisis before us, focusing us on what we need to do.
To our friends in the Youth Uprising – Wasted.ie are with you all the way.
